The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Deanery welcomes all first years to the NWU.

Message from the Executive Dean:

Dear students,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (FNAS) as a cohort of First Year Students.

Our faculty is one of the largest and most productive ones in the university and has an international standing in many of its disciplines. We are happy to have you as part of the family of our academic community.

I know that in the first few months you will be grappling with information overload but you will certainly be able to decipher all within a reasonably short time. The environment may also be intimidating at first, since the teaching and learning methods are quite different from your past experiences. Do not despair though, your admission to the university is evidence that we have full confidence that you will cope with the rigours of academic work and life. The university many support systems that are in place to help you settle and to acclimatize e.g. the student chapters, Wellness programmes, tutor systems and importantly help from your peers and Subject Group Leaders.

The COVID 19 has also presented additional challenges as many lectures are delivered and assessed online, so as to ensure safety of all. This is also an exciting opportunity to learn differently and many students are happy with the online learning model as it allows:

  • Flexibility to study where and when you wish
  • Provides access to online teaching materials
  • Enables students to plan their learning at own terms
  • Sharpens their IT skills particularly in the 4IR era

Once again, I welcome you warmly in our midst, be assured that we have your interest to offer you a good academic experience.

Please observe all COVID 19 safety protocols and keep well.

Kind regards

Prof David M Modise (Executive Dean – Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences)
