DSTI-NRF Indigenous Knowledge-Driven Medicinal Plants utilisation and conservation strategies for Human, Animal and Crop Health (IK-Medplants4HAC)
Our vision

IK-Medplants4HAC aims to address grand challenges facing humanity by aligning with institutional, national and international policies. By integrating Indigenous Knowledge (IK) with cutting-edge scientific research, IK-Medplants4HAC offers a dedicated platform to drive capacity building of the next generation of researchers, enhance sustainability, and advance South Africa’s bioeconomy.
Our research

Assessment of the efficacy of plant-based solutions, development of scalable technologies, and integrating them into mainstream health and agricultural practices. The overarching goal of the SARChI in IK-Medplants4HAC is to advance the sustainable uses and conservation of South African floras for health and economic benefits. This research programme is structured into four interconnected subthemes, which aligns with global and national frameworks, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs, 2030), the South African National Development Plan (NDP, 2030), and the South African IK Act 6 of 2019.
