Bacteria from the Nitrogen Cycle, groundwater quality and microbial community composition

Bacteria from the Nitrogen Cycle, groundwater quality and microbial community composition.

Henry Burger (MSc)
Supervisor: Lesego Molale-Tom

Rationale
Groundwater quality is deteriorating, mostly due to the nitrogen cycle. The impact of the bacteria from the nitrogen cycle on groundwater is not specific.

Objectives

  • Determine the Physico-chemical quality of the groundwater systems of interest;Identify the bacteria from the nitrogen cycle by means of culture-based methods
  • Determine the presence of antibiotic resistance within the bacteria from the nitrogen cycle
  • Determine the microbial composition of groundwater systems by means of eDNA extraction

Benefit to interdisciplinary objectives of the UESM
This project will give more insight into the current quality of the groundwater at the site, and possibly give insight on how to improve the quality.
