The Catalysis and Synthesis research group has shifted their focus from studying mainly homogeneous catalysis to investigating the utilization and beneficiation of Fischer-Tropsch products to produce high-value surfactants. The group's main objective is to synthesize, characterize, and to find new applications with potential industrial importance in speciality surfactants, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, and agriculture. This objective is achieved by developing new concepts, catalysts, and reactions from a fundamental perspective, using both theoretical modelling and experimental methods. Although the applied aspects of surfactant chemistry are emphasised in the group’s research focus, it is done from a fundamental perspective using both theoretical (modelling) and experimental means. The group aims to establish a centre of expertise in surfactant research and development. The group includes Dr Frans Smit (group leader), Prof Manie Vosloo, Dr Johan Jordaan, and Dr Danie Otto.
