The research focus area for Chemical Resource Beneficiation (CRB) in the Faculty of Natural Sciences comprises participants of the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, the School of Chemical and Mineral Engineering and the School of Pharmacy. The combination of these related disciplines ensures a competitive advantage to offer the country research expertise and well-trained researchers. The CRB aims to add sustainable value to the South African mineral and chemical resource base. The NWU lies in two provinces, namely North-West and (southern) Gauteng, and is adjacent to two provinces, namely Free State and Limpopo, that are rich in metal-based and carbon-based resources. The beneficiation of these resources is therefore of critical importance for sustainable economic development, not only in the region but also in the rest of South Africa.

The CRB’s strategic aims are to satisfy the chemistry-based research and development needs of its regional clients; train innovative-thinking researchers; establish a synergy through interaction between chemical scientists and engineers; undertake high-quality research and strive for optimal joint application of expertise by means of strategic alliances in cooperation with clients; use the available resources effectively; and place a high premium on the publication of research results in internationally recognised scientific journals.

The CRB wants to personify the vision and mission of the NWU through its quest to be relevant and competitive internationally.
