Welcome to the Centre for Applied Radiation and Technology (CARST)

Who we are

In 1999 the Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology (CARST) was formed, through the MoU between the NUCLEAR INDUSTRY and NWU, quote, “In response to challenges posed by a need to diversify, expand, sustain, and maintain high quality nuclear skills across the breadth of the nation’s research and industrial formations”.

Today CARST is a pioneer in the Applied Radiation Science research and training. The Centre is mandated to carry out research and build capacity for the Nuclear Industry in South Africa (namely NECSA, NNR, iThemba Labs, ESKOM, DST, DMR and DoE).  CARST endeavors to achieve this mandate by offering the following Postgraduate Programmes at Honors, Masters and Doctorate levels. The Center has got two pillars, namely Training and Applied Research both in Applied Radiation Science and Technology.

Mission

To develop the Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology into a national and regional training institution for the Applied Radiation Sciences and to support the development needs of the nuclear and related industries in line with the latest international standards and best practices.

Why should students/researchers choose to affiliate with us?

The Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology (CARST)’s Postgraduate Programmes are relevant to the needs of the Nuclear Industry, National needs to develop exceptional skills base, and the graduates themselves as this is a field in which they are easily employed both locally and internationally.

South Africa will be introducing the Nuclear Build Programme in 2017 - 2027. The new Doctor of Philosophy will enhance the capacity of CARST to develop skills for this expanding nuclear industry.

To increase  its relevance and contribution to the skills development for SA’s expanding  nuclear industry, (with more nuclear power plants in the pipe line), the Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology (CARST), has fulfilled obligation now to increase its number of Programmes offered at Post graduate level up to a Doctor of Philosophy Degree.
