About Potchefstroom

Situated on the banks of the Mooirivier (which means 'beautiful river' in Afrikaans, one of the 11 official languages of South Africa) Potchefstroom, or Potch as the locals refer to it, is well known for being a academic town, that boasts a beautiful tree-lined scenery and a buzzing student community. Just off of campus you will experience the socialites dream, know as the Bult - a series of restaurants and local establishments that create an entertaining atmosphere for residents and visitors. Apart from the NWU and neighboring academic institutions housed in Potchefstroom, the city is also home to a strong farming community, the country’s largest chalk factory, one of the largest organ factories in South Africa, and a generous hospitality sector.

Potchefstroom was the first town north of the Vaal River and has a historical legacy that includes the largest oak tree avenue in the southern hemisphere and various national monuments like the old police station building, the Heimat building that can be found on the NWU's Potchefstroom Campus, the magistrate’s office, the old gunpowder house and various churches worth visiting. The Edwardian City Hall, together with that of Krugersdorp, is the oldest existing city hall north of the Vaal River.

With much to offer, we look forward to welcoming you to our city.

About the NWU

The NWU is committed to functioning as a unitary, integrated, multi-campus university that enables equity, redress and globally competitive teaching and research across all three of our campuses. Our core activities, teaching-learning and research, are intertwined with community engagement and innovation in our eight faculties, most of which serve both distance and contact students.

The NWU offers more than just an education: we offer people a place in the world. Academically, students benefit from great choice and flexibility, enabling them to fulfill their potential and start preparing for their careers.

Through collaboration with other universities and institutions internationally, we are part of the global higher education community. Our internationalisation activities include student and staff exchange and cooperation in academic, research, cultural and sports matters.

As we like to say in our University Anthem: “where the willow trees grow and the thorn tree spreads its shade, there you will grow in knowledge…”
