Ecology

WRG Ecology studies estuarine, wetland and river ecosystems with the aim to determine the interactions and/or relationships between the different organisms and their responses to their environment.  This research aims to contribute towards local, regional and national knowledge of the southern African aquatic biodiversity through high-quality, relevant research and collaborations with our international partners.

Our research focuses on the following broad topics:

  • Biomonitoring surveys (including biotic indices DRAM, SASS5, FRAI & MRAI)

  • Baseline aquatic surveys

  • Aquatic biodiversity surveys

  • Aquatic Impact assessments for EIA’s

  • Diatoms (general algal diversity services can also be provided)

  • Aquatic specialist studies for EIA’s

  • Water quality studies

  • Sediment quality studies (metal and organic pollution)
