MATHEMATICS INDUCTION COURSE
All information regarding the Mathematics Induction Course including what it is, who must take it, why certain students have to take it, its programme and the contact persons for the course are provided below.
The main purpose of the MIC is to help first year students to adapt to the high pace of first year Mathematics and to improve the pass rate. To cope with the fast pace and the large quantity of work, the MIC is of utmost importance. Work done at school is revised and new concepts are discussed. These concepts are frequently used during the year, so students will understand it easier since it has already been presented during the MIC. The modules MTHS111/121 (Introductory Algebra and Analysis I and II) are prerequisites for many other Mathematics and Applied Mathematics modules. This includes students who are enrolled for programs that have Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics as modules, as well as all engineering students. Students taking these modules can easily fall behind because their study time is extended by at least one year if they fail MTHS111/121. Engineering students and BSc students with MTHS111, cannot continue with any second year Mathematics or Applied Mathematics modules. It is therefore very important that they pass MTHS111/121 the first time. The MIC is starting now. It consists of a workbook that you must work through during the time between the matriculation examination and the commencement of the Registration and Orientation Period (R&O Period) from 1 to 8 February 2025, an on-campus session during the R&O Period and a test. The MIC costs R500 and will be deducted from your NWU account by the end of March 2025. You will need an exercise book of at least 192 pages, a pen or pencil, at least 50 hours, and dedication to complete the course. There will be two opportunities to write the test. The best mark will be used. To access the MIC eFundi page, you must do the following. Download the workbook (English - Mathematics Induction Guide 2025 | Afrikaans - Wiskunde Induksiegids 2025). Start working on it immediately. It will take you approximately 50 hours to work through it. This workbook must be completed by 1 February 2025. Additional help is available on the online platform eFundi. Once you are registered as an NWU student, you will gain access to this platform. From this platform you will also have access to an AI Mathematics tutor, MindJoy, who will assist you.
Help with the use of the eFundi platform and MindJoy will be provided during the MIC session in the R&O period. See the programme for details regarding the sessions and times during which the computer laboratories will be available for the use of the eFundi platform and MindJoy.
The MIC test contributes to your final mark for MTHS111. If you achieve more than 70% in all sections of this test, you can consider yourself sufficiently prepared for MTHS111. A practice test is available on eFundi. Access to eFundi
