Travel options to the Kruger National Park

The GOFCP conference is set to start at 18h00 on Friday the 25th of August, with a welcome function and “Boma braai” (barbeque). Check-in at Skukuza lodge will be from 14h00 on the 25th of August. Check-out will be on Tuesday the 29th of August at 10h00. The organisers will cover the cost of accommodation for all four nights (25, 26, 27 and 28) in the Kruger Park; this includes 3 meals per day as well as tea-time snacks. It will also include an early morning organised game drive as well as an evening game drive which will end with a bush “braai” (barbecue). Furthermore, cars and mini-buses will be available to go for game drives before the start of the programme each day (or whenever delegates want to go out exploring).

You have four main travel options to get from the Johannesburg airport (OR Tambo International, JNB) to Skukuza camp in the Kruger Park:

Option 1

Recommended for those that want to take their time driving down to the Kruger Park and explore the Blyde River Canyon area [Additional accommodation costs apply].

  • At 10h00 on the 24th of August we will arrange for a mini-bus to pick you up at the City Lodge Hotel at OR Tambo airport.
  • The mini-bus will transport you to a lodge near the Blyde River Canyon where we will spend the night. You will be given the opportunity to explore the area here that afternoon and the next morning. We will let you know at a later stage what the exact accommodation at the Blyde River Canyon will be; please note that this night’s accommodation is at your own expense.
  • On the 25th of August the mini-bus will take you on the second leg of the journey to the Kruger Park. You will arrive at the Kruger Park Skukuza Camp for check-in before 15h00 on the same day.
  • Suggestion: You can book your flight to land in South Africa (JNB) on the 23rd of August and book accommodation to sleep at the OR Tambo Airport City Lodge Hotel that same night. You can book this accommodation here. The hotel is on the premises of the airport.  You can then catch the 10h00 bus on the 24th of August.

Option 2

Recommended for those that want to fly to the Kruger Park a day early and spend an extra day there; additional game drive [Additional accommodation costs apply].

  • On the 24th of August fly from OR Tambo (JNB) to the Kruger Park’s Skukuza airport (SZK). There are two possible flights on the 24th: one at 10h05 and the other at 13h05. This is a 45 minute flight.
  • After you land, we will pick everyone up from Skukuza airport and take them to the lodge (about 3km away).
  • Please note that we must book accommodation at the Kruger Park for the night of the 24th of August. We have already reserved some additional accommodation at the Kruger Park on the night of the 24th, but there is limited availability. Please let us know if you wish to make use of this option so that we can secure the accommodation beforehand; please note that you will need to pay for this accommodation on arrival.
  • There will be mini-buses to take you for sightseeing for the remainder of the day and on Friday.
  • Suggestion: You can book your flight to land in South Africa (JNB) on the 23rd of August and book accommodation to sleep at the OR Tambo Airport City Lodge Hotel that same night. You can book this accommodation here. The hotel is on the premises of the airport. You can then catch the flight to Skukuza on the 24th of August.

Option 3

Recommended for those that would like to drive down to the Kruger Park in a single trip (no extra days in the Kruger Park; no additional excursions beforehand).

  • At 8h00 on the 25th of August we will arrange for a mini-bus to transport you directly to the Kruger Park Skukuza Camp. We will pick you up at the City Lodge Hotel at OR Tambo airport. The trip can take anywhere between 5 and 7 hours.
  • You will arrive at the Kruger Park Skukuza Camp for check-in before 17h00 on the 25th of August.
  • Suggestion: You can book your flight to land in South Africa (JNB) on the 24th of August and book accommodation to sleep at the OR Tambo Airport City Lodge Hotel that same night. You can book this accommodation here. The hotel is on the premises of the airport. You can then catch the 08h00 bus on the 25th of August.

Option 4

Recommended for those that would like to fly to the Kruger Park (no extra days in the Kruger Park; no additional excursions beforehand).

  • On the 25th of August fly from OR Tambo (JNB) to the Kruger Park’s Skukuza airport (SZK). There are two possible flights on the 25th: one at 10h05 and the other at 13h05. This is a 45 minute flight.
  • After you land, we will pick everyone up from Skukuza airport and take them to the lodge (about 3km away). You will arrive before 17h00 at the Skukuza Lodge on the 25th (in time for the conference check-in).
  • Suggestion: You can book your flight to land in South Africa (JNB) on the 24th of August and book accommodation to sleep at the OR Tambo Airport City Lodge Hotel that same night. You can book this accommodation here. The hotel is on the premises of the airport. You can then catch the flight to Skukuza on the 25th of August.

The conference ends on the 29th of August. For those that choose to drive to Johannesburg airport, mini-buses will be made available for this trip at roughly 8h00 that morning. Please note that if you intend to book a return flight on the 29th that you will have to make sure that the flight takes off after about 19h00. Ideally your flight should be booked for the following day (30th of August), in which case you can arrange to sleep over at the OR Tambo City Lodge Hotel for that night. You can book this accommodation here.

For those that intend to fly from Skukuza to OR Tambo international airport in Johannesburg, mini-buses will be arranged to transport you to the Skukuza airport for that flight on the day.
