A three-year postdoctoral position in any one of the Centre’s research focus areas but preferably in high-energy astrophysics, galaxy formation and evolution, or heliospheric physics. For full consideration, candidates must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, space physics or related fields. Candidates must have obtained their PhD not more than 5 years before the starting date of the appointment and be under 45 years of age. The current fellowship amount for this position is ZAR R299 600 (tax-free) p.a., with an additional once-off relocation allowance of up to ZAR 20K plus a ZAR 40K p.a. for research running expenses.

The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the research activities of the CSR, which include the timely publication of research findings and postgraduate student mentorship.

The position is currently vacant and needs to be filled as soon as possible. The incumbent may be based on either the Potchefstroom or Mahikeng campuses of NWU, depending on research focus and availability of hosts.

Interested applicants should send a CV, a list of publications and a statement of research experience and interests and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Elanie.VanRooyen@nwu.ac.za and Markus.Bottcher@nwu.ac.za by 30 September 2024. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview shortly afterwards.

Senior postdoctoral fellowship in high-energy astrophysics

A senior postdoctoral fellowship in high-energy astrophysics. The appointment is initially for 1 year, renewable up to 2 - 3 years, depending on performance and funding availability. The fellowship is ZAR 466 704 p.a., with an additional once-off relocation allowance of up to ZAR 20K plus a ZAR 40K  p.a. for research running expenses.

A Ph.D. in astronomy / astrophysics or a closely related field is required. The ideal candidate should have prior postdoctoral experience, be under 45 years of age, and within 5 years of their PhD graduation date.

The research activities should focus on theoretical (or observational) high-energy (and multi-wavelength) astrophysics. The postdoc will work with Prof. Christo Venter on modelling of broadband pulsar, pulsar binary, and pulsar wind nebula emission, as well as observational / theoretical work on pulsars and fast radio bursts. The CSR’s Pulsar Group has links with H.E.S.S., CTA, Fermi LAT, SALT, and MeerKAT projects.

Institutional expectations include:

  • Publication of 4 refereed journal papers p.a.
  • Co-supervision of at least 1 M.Sc. or Ph.D. student p.a.
  • Participation in grant proposal writing - at least one submission p.a.
